at Breevoort Island in a Kenn Borek Twin Otter. Baffin Island can be quite mountainous, often leaving very few spots to put down.

Rent a satellite phone.  A sat phone provides the extra security of being able to make a call from virtually anywhere.  Iridium offers phone rental services.  Check with Arctic Survival Store in Iqaluit.  Be sure to contact them in advance to ensure they have what you need. Be aware that the Globalstar phone system is currently having satellite problems, which have resulted in a degradation of their sat phone service. And check out this new, inexpensive, portable satellite alerting device called SPOT.

AVGAS/MOGAS in Nunavut:

Officially, avgas isn’t available in most communities.  But some places may stock a small number of 100LL drums.  Try these contacts… and let us know what you find out.  We’re not in regular contact to obtain AVGAS outside Iqaluit, as our 172 is STC’d for MOGAS, so that’s what we use if we need fuel when traveling to another south Baffin community.  If you’re attempting to obtain MOGAS in other communities, be aware that there is usually one local fuel agent, with limited (i.e. regular daytime 9-5) business hours.  You should always phone ahead to check hours and availability. Also, they may not have clean gas cans at hand, so you’re wise to carry your own.  With all the stories in the south about problems with ethanol/methanol in gasoline used for aviation, we’ve checked with the Nunavut Petroleum Products Division (Feb 12/07)  They report that the purchase spec for MOGAS in Nunavut specifically EXCLUDES oxygenates…  which means there is no ethanol or methanol in Nunavut gasoline. They also say they have no plans to change the specs for future fuel purchases. Currently, MOGAS in Nunavut is priced about $1.29/litre (May 08).  Fuel prices usually change once per year in the fall, when the summer sealift of fuel is complete.

It is wise to check the availability of avgas in Iqaluit and NOTAMS carefully before flying here. Because all avgas in this region is in drums, you might be interested in this article about stored 100LL.

Download the Nunavut Community Business Inventory for fuel services and other business info for various communities.

Air Nunavut has made arrangements to airlift fuel into other Baffin Island communities for fliers on major northern trips.
